Castleberry Buying Fearnow Stew Firm

Castleberry/Snow's Brands, Inc., an Augusta, Ga.-based canned meats producer, is buying Mechanicsville-based Fearnow Bros. Inc., a canned stew company.

Both companies are private corporations and details of the deal were not disclosed.

"We have mixed feelings about selling the business," said Raymond M. Fearnow, secretary-treasurer of the local company. "But we feel the deal has worked out and Castleberry is committed to maintaining the quality."

Production of Fearnow Bros. products, including Mrs. Fearnow's stews, will remain in Mechanicsville under an agreement with George N. Fearnow, Raymond M. Fearnow and Jean Fearnow Lane.

Raymond Fearnow said Castleberry/Snow's Bedford operations, Bunker Hill, will help Fearnow Bros., a family owned business since the beginning in the late 1920s.

Castleberry is the leading brand of beef stew in the Southeast. The company also manufactures canned barbecue, hot dog chili sauce, canned clams and clam juice. Among the company's brands are Doxsee, Bunker Hill, Austex and Morton House.
